Liane’s Light-hearted List of 5 Habits to Kick this New Years
1. Smoking:
We’ve heard this lecture a thousand times, and the rant of parents and other family members always increases ten-fold around the Holidays. The time period between November and January 1st, when you’re obliged to listen to what the “relatives” have to say. But, let’s face it, the Holidays are stressful enough, so unless you’re strong enough to handle the stress involved with the Holiday aftermath of clean-up, returns, dishes, and thank you cards without the nicotine stress relief, then push this task of kicking the habit aside for a rainy day when your throat is so dry and scratchy that you don’t want to touch a cigarette anyway.
2. Drinking:
Drinking costs a lot of lives and money every year, especially around the Holidays. Now, if you’re the person who washes vodka down with breakfast, I suggest skipping the New Years resolution, and picking up an AA book for yourself. Save that booze money to buy something nice for your loved ones with a nice card attached promising to quit, or at least cut down…as much fun as it is…no one likes a sloppy drunk, especially when you get behind the wheel of a car.
3. Caffeine:
Mmmm…I know how fantastic it is to wash down that morning cigarette with coffee. Caffeine is a major part of many people’s day. It’s a jump-start on that hectic day you have lying ahead of you, and it makes even guys PMS if they go without it. But, caffeine is not healthy, doctors have been telling us this for years. Yet, again who can bear giving up this vital ingredient in our diet? You can start slow by cutting back at first. Or hey, if it’s someone else who has the problem- your wife or husband or 16-year-old kid who just pulled an all nighter, switch that drink to decaf. They’re so “tired” anyway; maybe they won’t know the difference.
4. Drugs:
Drugs are bad. Everyone knows this, yet again and again we test our invincibility. First with a little pot when we’re younger, then we move on to better and more expensive drugs. NEWS FLASH: Drugs are illegal. Of course they make you feel good or at least taking them will make you feel better, why else would so many people check into rehab each year. So, this Christmas, put the pill bottles and needles away, and concentrate on an activity that will keep you on a constant high, and something that will keep you out of jail.
5. Unprotected Sex:
You would probably break down in tears if I whipped out STD statistics, so I’ll just get straight to the point…USE Protection! They aren’t expensive, most of the time you can find them for free. They’re great stocking stuffers, and although it might not feel exactly the same, everyone still has fun, and you don’t have to spend time worrying afterwards that you’ll be dead in ten years, and so will be all the other “friends” you’ve exposed.
Let’s face it, one night stands are great, and so is the booze and drugs that got you into that situation, and so is the after sex cigarette, and the morning after coffee to wake you up from your all night stupor. BUT…we all know deep down inside that these habits are detrimental to our health. So, this holiday season do your best to kick one of these habits, or at least cut back. Believe it or not there are people out there that actually by-pass these habits that many of us think we can’t possibly live without.
